Three Key Steps to Knowing Yourself More!

#1.  Personality Assessment and Conflict Management Assessment - Ten minutes each: 

ITP Metrics is a website that offers a variety of team assessment tools. There are two assessments that are very useful for team development. The purpose is not to "label" you as being one way or another, but to contribute to your self-awareness of current patterns, preferences and tendencies with respect you to how you interact with others on a team. Knowing yourself helps to build team success!

PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT: This assessment outlines five factors of personality. You will receive a report describing how your personality traits can relate to your team interactions and experiences in teamwork.  

CONFLICT STYLES ASSESSMENT:  This assessment helps to build awareness about personal styles of conflict management. Information from the report can be used to gain greater awareness about situations in which each style would be the most effective.

#2. Understand your Personal Values -  a few minutes: 

The Personal Values Assessment (PVA) from the Barrett Values Centre is a simple survey that takes just a few minutes of your time and provides a wealth of information about why you do what you do. #3. Reflective Questions - 30 minutes (and well worth it!):

Personal insight is understanding one's emotions, strengths, weaknesses, drives, values and goals and recognizing their impact on others. Self-awareness is a skill that is learned and developed.  Use this document to gain clarity prior to sharing responses with your team: Preparing for Teamwork - Reflective Questions to Know Thyself.


Self Reflection

Self reflection is a key to successful teamwork. The first step is to be curious abour your thinking, this learning about self is a beginning of growing safety in your team.

Where to start? 

Three Steps to Building a Self-Reflective Practice:

#1. Be curious.  

Simply be curious about your own thinking. Often we are unaware of our thoughts, feelings, and attitudes unless we take steps to surface them, explore them in a non-defensive way, and potentially, to be willing to re-shape them in order to serve ourselves more effectively. This can require an act of vulnerability. 

Watch this Ted Talk featuring Brene Brown, a research professor, talking about vulnerability and building relationships.  

#2.  Suspend your judgment about your thoughts, feelings, and attitudes. 

Ask yourself if this kind of thinking supports you or not in getting the results you say you want.  

Here is Simon Sinek stating why self-reflection helps with personal growth.  

Reflective thinking can be a great tool for debriefing situations and interactions to enhance your understanding of yourself. 

#3.  Integrate some reflective tools into your daily life.  

  • Pause during the day to notice your thoughts
  • Use a journal to write down your thoughts and observations.  
  • Begin a mindfulness practice
  • Consider developing a structured practice of Self-Reflection.
