You have launched your team assignment. But how do you stay on track?

Here are 5 useful tips:

Tip #1

When developing your team assignment work schedule (to include in your Team Planning Process document), share:

  • your individual schedules (when are you available and when are you not)
  • the timing of all other course assignments and individual commitments (eg. work schedules, personal appointments)

and then create a realistic work schedule that everyone will be able to follow through on.   Be flexible with each other.  Life happens!  You will likely need to adjust plans as your work together.  Do the best you can to prioritize your teamwork.

Tip #2

Teamwork is about learning and working together, so avoid competing with each to have the "best" idea.  Your team is successful when you work together and appreciate each other's contributions, rather than competing against each other. 

Tip #3

Teamwork starts with individual work.  Each person on the team should have an opportunity to share their thoughts, ideas, and suggestions for the project before the team starts narrowing down their options.   Use the SUIT framework to guide inclusive yet efficient team discussion and decision-making.

Tip #4

Refer to your Team Agreement frequently.  If you're going to change the way you do things, then everyone must agree and sign off on the changes.  Given the fast pace of classes at Royal Roads University, we suggest a few default agreements, at least to get you started:

  • Silence is acceptance.  By saying nothing, you are agreeing to the team's decisions.
  • Show up on time and prepared for team meetings.  Stay for the duration of the meeting.
  • When together, give your focus to your team, not your phone.  

Tip #5

Prioritize creating and maintaining trusting and respectful relationships - trust and respect both take time to build, and can be damaged in an instant.  And when things aren't going well, give each other the benefit of the doubt. Then, be courageous and willing to engage in difficult conversations - respectfully - for the sake of your team.
